the story of welcome inn

As soon as we stepped inside this beautiful, yet downtrodden, historic home, we knew it was special. As we have dug into the history and heard the stories of this place, we are all the more honored to have been able to bring her back to life.
Memories are infused in the walls and we did our best to honor the original character of the home during the restoration.

The Welcome Inn was originally built by the King family in the 1870’s on a 160-acre working farm. Over the past one hundred and fifty years, we know of only four previous owners. We have met two of the families who lived and loved and made their mark in this place.

The restoration itself took just under a year and was a massive undertaking. We faced extensive rot in the floors and walls, termite damage, hundreds of thousands of bees living within the exterior columns, and had to bring the house up to code with electrical and plumbing and a functioning kitchen.

We have fallen hard for this beautiful home and cannot wait to open the doors to share it with all of you. It wasn’t an easy restoration but it was most assuredly worth it.

We’ve received a lot of questions about who will take care of the chickens at the Inn, and I LOVE answering this one! We’ve partnered with a local nonprofit doing amazing work with young women in our community who have aged out of foster care or are facing homelessness. Together with @savinggracenwa, we’ve developed a hospitality training program for these young women that involves working at the Welcome Inn and caring for the home, the gardens, the guests and, of course, the chickens.

We are absolutely passionate about this work and are honored to know that this special house is going to be a welcoming place for visitors and for these incredible young women who are seeking to change the trajectory of their lives.

We’ll see you at the Inn,
